Commercial mengkuang farming provides
good income for couple
A lot has changed
since Ampa ak Tabau, 39, and his wife Sinta ak Jambai, 34, of Rumah Lua
in Pasai Siong started their farm 10 years ago.
With the help of
the Department of Agriculture, Sibu, they started the commercial planting
of mengkuang about a year ago and can now boast a monthly income of about
RM2,000 from the harvest.
"We have about
23 acres of land in which we plant a variety of crops with substantial
portion devoted to mengkuang", Ampa said.
They can harvest
an average of 2,000 kilos per month which they usually supply to consumers
at the Sunday market in Sibu town.
"The creeping tendrils of
the mengkuang must
be twirled clockwise to
ensure best yield",
