Nothing quite like the Sibu pomelos
The sweet citrusy
aroma that permeates the air as we enter the swampy, water-logged farm of
Mr. Tong Chui Leong made our rough ride into the predominantly Chinese "vegetable
belt" of Sungai Bedut worthwhile.
This is the land
of the famous honey pomelos - an area of several tens of acres of swampy
land which the government is helping to develop for the commercial farming
of honey pomelos.
Since the project
was started in 1997, the government has spent about RM128,000 in subsidies
for the farmers involved to increase and improve the yield of this sweet
fruit. Currently, the yield is just enough to meet the local market demand.
Just ripe for the picking.
Any bigger and
fruit loses its juiciness
and becomes less sweet.
