11 Organisations Receive Quality Awards
Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud presented ISO
9000 quality awards to 11 organisations within the Sarawak Civil Service at
the official opening of the Sarawak's 2nd International Qualiy Congress held
recently in Kuching .
The award recipients were the Ministry of Environment and Public Health, Majlis
Adat Istiadat, Samarahan Resident's office, Sarawak Welfare Services Department,
Museum Department, Sarawak Rivers Board and five District Offices- Samarahan,
Serian, Simunjan, Lundu and Kapit.
These recipients have worked hard in their respective departments in order
to complete the requirements for the certification and eventually improve their
performance and provide better service to the general public. " The government
tries to impress the the quality attribute into everyone because once imbedded,
there is no need to promote it anymore as it will be a part of their everyday
life" commented Dr. Razali Abon, Director of the Human Resource Development
and Quality Unit, Chief Minister's Department.
To date, 78 government agencies and departments have ISO 9000 certification.
Though this may sound a good achievement for the Sarawak Civil Service, the
government continues to further promote quality circles in all its agencies.
In addition, the government has introduced quality measurement systems and approaches,
such as the Balanced Score Card and the Investment in People Standards (IIPS).
The government has also been successful in getting many industries in the private
sector to practise skills development, especially in the manufacturing sectors.
About 100 corporations in Sarawak have SIRIM certification, 32 have product
quality certifica-tions, seven ISO 14001 (environ-mental award) and three ISO
18001 (occupational health and Safety).
