East-West Fibre Optic Cable Link Completed Broadband Capacity Enhanced

The East-West Submarine Cable System,a new state-of-the-art link between Buntal in Sarawak, and Mersing in Peninsular Malaysia, is now completed.

It will provide a higher bandwidth to enhance the speed and efficiency of information and communications technology. State Secretary Datuk Amar Haji Abdul Aziz Haji Husain said at the soft launching of the system that the fibre optic link would enable the State to be better connected to the Peninsular and
eventually its regional neighbours.

“With the system fully in place, the BIMP-EAGA region would be connected and hence gave impetus for further developments in the region for the State ’s mutual benefits.” Datuk Amar Aziz also pointed out that with the higher bandwidth capacity offered by the fibre optic submarine cable, the people in the State would be able to reap the benefits of broadband services.

“There is no doubt that the usage of the internet for social, economic and educational purposes would increase with this new system,” added Datuk Amar Aziz.

“…one of the broadband services that I foresee will be increasingly popular is tele-conferencing.Meetings can be held online and new ideas can begin to take shape faster. And along the same line, children who are studying in places far from their parents can remedy their homesickness by just dialling in.”

The fibre optic cable has a transmission capacity of 20 gigabytes per second and can be upgraded to 2.88 terabytes per second. The project, undertaken by Sacofa Sdn Bhd,a government- wned company, began in 2003 and was completed in the first quarter of this year.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Sacofa Sdn Bhd,Ir.Abang Jemat Abang Bujang said that “…by linking the State to the rest of the world via the electronic super highway,it was also an ideal marketing strategy to attract more foreign investors to our shores.” Abang Jemat stressed Sacofa ’s commitment of its social responsibility to assist the State government in bridging the digital divide between the urban and rural areas.
